Welcome to Backworth Hall Scouts

We hope your child enjoys being a member of our Group and if you or your child have any questions then please do not hesitate to ask any of the leadership team.

Below you will find some key information about our group.

Where and When

Backworth Hall Scouts meets on Monday evenings at Backworth Hall, Backworth, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE27 0AH. We do not meet during School holidays or on Bank Holidays.

Squirrels – 5:15 to 6:15pm | Beavers – 5.30 to 6.30pm  | Cubs – 6.30 to 8:00pm  | Scouts – 6:30pm to 8:00pm

Drop Off/Collection Policy

Please ensure your child is dropped off, by a responsible adult coming into the hall, no earlier than their section start time and they are collected by a responsible adult coming back into the hall (promptly) at the end. Please inform a leader when your child is dropped off and collected.

Subscriptions

Subscriptions are £22 per half term (which is equivalent to £3.50 per week across the academic year).

Subs are paid on or before the start of the half term, by direct debit via GoCardless.

Subs are made up of a £1.50 (compulsory) weekly Scouting insurance/ capitation fee, £1.50 rent of the hall per person per week and 50p for any equipment for activities

Uniforms

Uniforms are available online at shop.scouts.org.uk or www.walkoutdoors.com in Whitley Bay.

We advise you allow your young person to attend for 3 weeks before getting their uniform; we will then invest them into our group. The kneckerchief and badges cost £6.50; these stay with your young person throughout their time in scouting.

Whilst with us, your young person will work towards several badges (including their highest award – their Chief Scout Award). It may be necessary for them to do some work/research at home. Please encourage and help your young person to do this.

During the year the group will take part in District/County events and outings. You will be informed in advance of such activities.

Photograph Permission

Occasionally, during activities, photographs may be taken of our members. Please complete photo permission section on Online Scout Manager.

Gift Aid

In order to assist our Group with funding we will sometimes ask our members to take part in fundraising events. Soon you will receive Gift Aid request via email which we ask that you fill in if you pay tax. Gift Aid enables us to claim back any tax that would normally go to the Inland Revenue from the subscriptions that you pay.

Adult Help

To abide by The Scouts Association’s safety ratios and ensure events can take place, we may, sometimes, request your help with running outdoor activities away from Backworth Hall. If, you indicate on OSM that you are willing to help out with events and activities you will be asked to fill out an Occasional Helper form; this will enable us to do a DBS check which will ensure all our members are safe during all activities.

Social Media

We regularly use social media (closed groups) to share photos, events and news. It is also a useful platform for asking and answering general questions.

If you have Facebook, please request to join our whole group page then join the ones relevant to your child’s section. For safety, admin will only accept requests to join our sub-groups from people who are already members of our main group.

Online Scout Manager

All sections of our group use a safe and secure online system for all administration. This system is called Online Scout Manager – one feature is called Online Scout Manager (OSM).

OSM allows parents to;

  • Sign their young person up for events (without filling out several reply slips).
  • See and edit their young person’s personal details.
  • View the terms programme (and sign up to the parent rota when the leadership team requests an extra pair of hands).
  • See their young person’s badge progress.
  • You will receive an invitation to OSM shortly. Please log in and complete all the information requested.

The information will be kept by the Scouting Association only for emergencies. Please ensure personal and medical details are always up to date.

You should have received an invitation email with a personalised link for you to be able to create an account which will provide you with easier future access to the system. If you have more than one child as part of our group then you only need to create one parent account; from this account you will be able to access details held for all your children.
